The Southeast Asia Research Group (SEAREG) invites panel proposals or individual paper submissions for the Thematic Sessions during the SEAREG 2025 Summer Conference, hosted by Mahidol University, and is scheduled to meet in Bangkok, Thailand, July 7-9, 2025.
Thematic Sessions provide more established scholars of Southeast Asia the opportunity to present their research and gain valuable feedback from the SEAREG community.
Format
Each Thematic Session will feature three or four working papers that are substantively connected to one another, as well as a discussant. Sessions will be conducted in an APSA-style format of 15-minute paper presentations followed by 10 minutes of discussant comments before opening to questions from the audience.
Because the purpose of the SEAREG Thematic Sessions is to engage with more established scholars, lead authors for the working papers should be at least three years beyond their PhD. Although co-authored papers will be considered, all presenters and discussants named in the proposal should be at least three years post-PhD completion.
Topics
All paper or panel proposals for Thematic Sessions should fit within SEAREG's broad mission: to provide a forum for presenting and discussing the best new research by social scientists working on Southeast Asia.
Prior Thematic Sessions have included: “Challenges of Political Inclusion: Examining Minority Representation, State Policies, and Religious Organizations in Democratic and Authoritarian Regimes,” “The Dynamics of Public Participation in Vietnam,” “Exploring Subnational Democratic Variations in Indonesia: Insights from Electoral Democracy, Neighbourhood Leaders, and Ideological Diversity,” “Politics and Development in Southeast Asia,” and “Unpacking Causal Relationships: Exploring the Role of Colonial Narratives, Bureaucratic Selection, and Mosques in Shaping Societal Outcomes.”

- Title and abstracts of the paper (2,500 max characters)
- Names and affiliations of author(s) (indicate who the presenter will be)
For a panel submission:
- Session abstract of 200 words or less
- Title and abstracts of the two or three papers (2,500 max characters)
- Names and affiliations of presenters and discussant for the session

Application Deadline
Submissions are due June 16, 2025. However, proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the earlier you submit, the sooner you may receive a decision.
