State of the Field

Krislert Samphantharak is an expert in finance, public policy and economic development. 

He is the co-author of "Households as Corporate Firms: An Analysis of Household Finance Using Integrated Household Surveys and Corporate Financial Accounting (Cambridge University Press, 2010)," and focuses his research on households and firms in emerging economies. 

His recent publications include the studies of risk and return in village economies, impacts of natural disasters on farmers, ethnic segregation and public goods provision, and household debt over the life cycle. Currently, he is working on projects that employ big data analytics to study household finance, corporate finance and ownership structure, tax incentives and SMEs, and market power and business dynamism. He is also preparing a book manuscript on comparative economic development of Southeast Asian economies.

Samphantharak held visiting positions at the International Monetary Fund, UCLA, Australian National University, University of Tokyo and Yale-NUS College. He serves on the editorial board of Asian Development Review and as advisor of Puey Ungphakorn Institute for Economic Research at the Bank of Thailand.

State of the Region

Alice D. Ba is the Emma Smith Morris Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware. 

She studies the structures, processes, and systemic effects of regionalism and regional integration; relations between Southeast Asian states and major powers, especially China and the United States; and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Her recent work has also addressed the role of strategic narratives and the changing conditions of regional cooperation in Asia. 

She teaches courses on Southeast Asia's world relations and development, the international relations of Asia, Chinese foreign policy, and comparative regionalisms. 

The author of "(Re)Negotiating East and Southeast Asia: Region, Regionalism, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations" (Stanford 2009), Ba has received U.S. Fulbright awards for work in Beijing and Singapore. 

She served as director of Asian Studies at the University of Delaware from 2009-14 and acting chair from 2023-24.
