Edmund Malesky interviewed by BBC Vietnamese on U.S.-Vietnam trade agreement

In response to President Trump's announcement of a new U.S.-Vietnam trade agreement, Edmund Malesky tells BBC News Vietnamese that although the details still need to be finalized, the trade deal "is a positive step forward when tariffs on Vietnamese goods are reduced from a staggering 46% to 20%."

Additionally, the professor of political economy says that while China faces a 30% tariff on most goods, Vietnam would likely benefit from some production moving away from its northern neighbor.

"Vietnam's commitment to addressing origin evasion also benefits the U.S.," he says. "However, the 20% tariff is still very high and will continue to pose major challenges for Vietnamese manufacturers as well as increase prices for U.S. consumers."
