Edmund Malesky contributes expertise to SAGE Research Methods video collection

Edmund Malesky, the Oscar L. Tang Family Distinguished Professor of Political Science, is featured in two new videos in the SAGE Research Methods: Doing Survey Research collection, where he shares his expertise in survey methodology and governance research.

Released in 2026 by global academic publisher SAGE, the collection is designed as a resource to guide students and researchers through every stage of the survey process. The videos combine expert insights with practical application on survey design, implementation and analysis.

Drawing on his extensive experience designing and implementing surveys to study governance, corruption and citizen engagement, Malesky appears in two videos:

• List Experiments for Corruption and Sensitive Topics
  Malesky reviews using the unmatched count technique to study corruption and sensitive topics, including a definition of corruption, biases, real-world examples, and key takeaways for constructing a list experiment.
• Tracking Governance and Citizen Feedback in Vietnam
  Drawing on his fieldwork in Vietnam, Malesky discusses survey design, approaches to data analysis, and the challenges of measuring governance and citizen feedback over time.

A specialist in Southeast Asia, Malesky’s research lies at the intersection of comparative and international political economy, with a focus on authoritarian political institutions and their consequences, the political influence of foreign direct investment and multinational corporations, and the relationship between political institutions and private sector development.

The videos were created through a collaboration between the Sanford School of Public Policy, Duke's Office of Information Technology, and SAGE. Filming was conducted by Duke staff, while SAGE produced the final videos for the Doing Survey Research collection.
