MIDP alumnus Patrick Bwire (MIDP ’18) works with the Center for Conlifct Resolution (CECORE) in Uganda and is the project coordinator for Building Peace Through Young Adult Peace Champions, which aims to address both root causes as well as driving factors of conflicts in Ugandan communities. The project, coordinated by CECORE and the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC), provides young people skills in peacebuilding, while also training them to become entrepreneurs. When the project started, Bwire said young people told him “we appreciate peace, peace is very good, but we can’t eat peace.” Bwire says this is why they include attention to income-generating activities in their work, with the hope of addressing “the drivers of conflict.” This seven minute video released in November provides an overview of his team’s work and some of the inspiring stories of youth leaders in the northeastern region of Karamoja who have joined the program as youth peace champions.
